Variety Protection for Seed Companies

Your registered hybrid took years to develop and certify. Unauthorised multiplication and sale of your variety undermines that investment. Certify links each certified packet's QR to your PPV&FR registration. Origin tracks the seed from your breeder through foundation, certified, and commercial stages so unauthorised lots cannot enter the supply chain without detection.

The Variety Protection Gap

Three Ways Unauthorised Multiplication Damages Your Variety Investment

PPV&FR registration gives you legal protection. But a registration without a traceability system that documents every seed multiplication stage is difficult to enforce. These are the gaps your legal team faces without digital lot-level tracking.

🌿 Unlicensed Variety Multiplication

Former licensees or seed producers multiply your registered variety beyond the authorised volume and sell the excess under your variety name. Without lot-level tracking from the breeder seed stage, your legal team cannot document the trail.

🔍 Competitor Variety Masquerading as Yours

A competitor's inferior variety is labelled and sold as your registered hybrid in markets where your variety has an established reputation. Farmers report poor performance under your name. Your variety's reputation is damaged in markets you never actually failed in.

⚖️ Infringement Without Evidence

Your legal team suspects infringement but cannot prove the chain of custody from the infringing seed lot back to the unauthorised source. PPV&FR proceedings require documented evidence of the variety's registration and the infringing lot's deviation from the authorised chain.

How Origin Tracks the Full Chain

From Breeder Seed to Commercial Packet: Every Stage Documented

Variety infringement almost always enters the chain at the foundation or certified seed stage. Origin gives your QA and legal teams a documented record of every authorised lot at every stage.

🧬
Stage 1
Breeder Seed

Each breeder seed lot is registered in Origin with the PPV&FR registration number, variety identity, and authorised foundation seed producers. Only authorised foundation producers receive breeder seed allocations that are traceable in Origin.

🌱
Stage 2
Foundation Seed

Foundation seed lots produced from each breeder seed allocation are registered in Origin. The parent lot, production location, and authorised certified seed producers are all documented. Lots not traceable to an authorised breeder seed allocation are flagged.

🌾
Stage 3
Certified Seed

Certified seed lots are registered in Origin and linked to their foundation lot parent. The volume produced, certification agency lot number, and authorised distributor allocation are documented. Lots exceeding authorised volumes trigger an alert.

📦
Stage 4
Commercial Packet

Each retail packet carries a Certify QR linked to its certified lot in Origin. The full lineage from breeder seed to commercial packet is available in one scan. Farmers and legal teams can both access the documented chain.

What Acviss Does

Certify and Origin: Registration Linked to Chain-of-Custody

Certify links each packet's QR to your PPV&FR registration record. Origin tracks the lot from breeder seed through every production stage. Together they give your legal and QA teams documented evidence of the authorised seed chain and the anomalies that signal infringement.

Variety Identity and Authentication
Certify

Every certified packet carries a QR linked to the PPV&FR registration number, the certified lot, and the authorised production chain in Origin. Farmers, dealers, and certification agencies scan to confirm the packet is from an authorised lot. Packets not in the Certify registry return a failed-authentication result.

  • QR per packet linked to PPV&FR registration record
  • No-app verification for farmers and certification agencies
  • Authorised lot confirmation at point of purchase
  • Counterfeit packet detection at scan
  • Performance data linkable to authenticated lot records
  • Dashboard reporting by variety, lot, and region

Multi-Stage Seed Production Traceability
Origin

Origin registers every lot at every stage from breeder seed through foundation, certified, and commercial. Authorised producer allocations, production volumes, and distribution approvals are all documented. When a lot appears in the chain that cannot be traced to an authorised breeder seed allocation, Origin flags it. Your legal team has the documented chain-of-custody evidence for PPV&FR proceedings.

  • Breeder-to-commercial chain-of-custody documentation
  • Authorised producer allocation tracking by stage
  • Volume anomaly detection: lots exceeding authorised quantities flagged
  • Unlicensed lot detection: lots without authorised parent traced
  • PPV&FR proceeding evidence export
  • Variety performance data linkable to authenticated lot records

FAQ

Questions Seed Company Teams Ask Us

During the setup for each variety, your team enters the PPV&FR registration number and uploads the registration certificate into the Certify dashboard. Each commercial packet QR is then linked to that registration record. When a farmer or certification agency scans the packet, the verification page displays the variety name, PPV&FR registration number, and a link to the registration details. If any party wants to verify the registration, they can do so on the spot without contacting your office. For legal proceedings, the dashboard exports the full authentication and registration linkage record for each lot.
Yes. Origin is configured with the full production stage structure for your variety. Each stage is defined as a separate node type: breeder, foundation, certified, and commercial. Lots at each stage are registered with their parent lot reference, the producing entity, the production volume, and the authorised downstream recipients. When a lot at any stage cannot be traced to an authorised parent, Origin flags it. Your QA team can pull a complete lineage report for any commercial lot showing every stage from breeder seed to the commercial packet scanned by the farmer.
There are two detection paths. First, Origin flags commercial lots that scan but cannot be traced to an authorised certified seed lot in your registered production chain. These are packets in the market that your production record does not account for and are the primary signal of unlicensed multiplication. Second, Truviss can be configured to monitor seed marketplaces and agri-input platforms for listings of your variety name from sellers not in your authorised network. When both Origin anomalies and Truviss marketplace detections converge on the same geography, your legal team has strong grounds for a PPV&FR complaint.
Yes. Origin generates a chain-of-custody export for any lot that shows every scan event from breeder seed to the commercial packet in question. This export documents the authorised production path for your variety and shows that the infringing lot is not part of your documented chain. The Certify scan records show where the infringing packets were scanned, in which geographies, and at what volumes. Your legal team can present this documented evidence in PPV&FR proceedings without relying on witness testimony alone. The export format can be provided in any format your legal team requires.
Yes. Certify scan records include the lot number for each authenticated packet. If your agronomy team collects performance data from farmers who scanned genuine packets, that data can be linked back to the specific certified lot used. Over time this builds a lot-level performance record that your agronomy and QA teams can use to assess production location effects, seed treatment interactions, and regional performance variation. It also helps your legal team respond to crop failure complaints by confirming whether the seed used in a failing crop was from an authenticated lot or a potentially counterfeit source.

Your Registered Variety Deserves Protection That Goes Beyond a Certificate on the Wall.
